Prior to the play actually opening the main character, Edward (Phil Harper) entered a half lit stage and walked into a messy bed-sit. Deep in thought, morose, smoking, drinking and reciting "To be or not to be" here was a man obviously depressed and, we learned, mourning the memory of his wife on the first anniversary of her death. Enter Alex (Ben Witcombe) landlord, best friend and student. Listening to Edward's mournful comments he reminds him of a letter he had received from Edward saying how much he hated his wife. This then was the setting for a play that was thought provoking and, at times, funny. Shades of Blithe Spirit when the ghost of the wife Ruby (Nikki Ellis) enters and declares she was murdered and she is in limbo until she knows who committed the deed. This terrible deed happened of the opening night of her performance as Ophelia. Strong performances from a well balanced cast including Joanna Strong (Glenda), Ann Escritt (Frances) and Mike Galikowski (Hedley). Comedy timing from Phil Harper as always spot on. Good costumes, lighting, sound and set. Special effects deserve a mention. They were excellent and always right on cue.
