This was another excellent show from the Maryport society, performing once again, away from home in the Carnegie Theatre in Workington. There were some lovely performances of this stage version of the film, which starred Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. Luke Matear as the ghost of murdered Sam Wheat was very convincing. He sang superbly, particularly the famous unchained Melody. Playing alongside Luke was his partner Clare McMullen, she also sang extremely well. In fact there wasn’t a weak link in the show. Louise Dixon, playing Oda Mae Brown, an eccentric medium was also very good and sang very very well. Ben Hall as Carl Bruner, playing a work colleague of Sam’s, was the villain of the piece, stealing millions of dollars from the company .He also sang very well. Society veteran Tex Houghton was another villain, and Sam’s killer, another fine performance from Tex. All the minor roles were very well played and the production ensembles were well performed and choreographed by director Clark.
Clark Wilkinson had done a very good job in a short space of time, due to his professional theatre commitments, to get the quality he wanted. He is a very clever and talented young man.
The set worked very well, it was simple but very effective lighting was excellent and Clark’s special effects and illusions worked extremely well. The only small downside for me was the sound. I felt it was too loud at times, and tended to distort the singing voices occasionally. This is just my personal opinion and I don’t mean to be disrespectful to the performers.
On the whole a terrific production from MAODS. Congratulations to all concerned and I look forward to future visits to the society shows.
