GASLIGHT is the classic thriller, first performed at Richmond Theatre in London in 1938. A British Film, based on the play, was made in 1940 and then in 1944 Hollywood produced the version people are more familiar with.  All the action unfolds over the course of one evening when Bella Manningham's life is turned upside down. We begin by questioning Bella's sanity, as she does herself; after all she tells us her mother died in the mad House at around the same age she is now.

For a 21st Century audience the term "Gaslighting" has very specific meaning but most people who use it are unaware of its origins. In this play you see how the term came to be applied to situations where the victim is made to doubt their own judgment and sense of reality as a result of their abusers lies and manipulation.

Gaslight is not the easiest play for any Director let alone a first time Director .... but Rachel Toner (1st time Director) took on that challenge and it became very apparent from the characterization and movement, which always looked natural and credible, that Rachel had a good understanding of this piece and how she wanted to portray it, well done Rachel.  Loved the opening which was very effective, the music and projection creating the perfect atmosphere, although I did find the introduction of physical abuse into the plot a little unusual.

The Cast ...

‘Bella Manningham’ played by Rebecca Moran

‘Jack Manningham’ played by Chris King

‘Elizabeth’ played by Elspeth Fisher

‘Nancy’ played by Anna Spencer

‘Sergeant Rough’ played by Allan Mayer

‘Police Officers’ played by Luke Brown and Peter Gallagher

It was wonderful to see each and every actor recreated their characters with sincerity and depth, but having said that, I would like to make special mention and highlight the performance of Rebecca Moran, who was, in my opinion, perfectly cast as Bella Manningham.  Rebecca, through her demeaner and facial expressions, showed us all the inner psychological turmoil of the character with empathy and imagination. This was a lovely balanced performance, a highlight from the play for me!

I was also very impressed with the authentic setting, the lighting and sound all of which contributed and enhanced this dark and menacing piece of theatre!

Thank you so much for inviting me, I really did enjoy the show and look forward to seeing you all again soon!
