Well directed, well cast and well acted. What more does a play need? This production had plenty more with an amazing set, designed by Sam Evans and built by a talented group of members, humour in abundance, good lighting and sound and enthusiasm from both the cast and audience.
Liz Berriman was impressive as Jean Perkins, the wife who turns to drink when faced with a case full of money mistakenly brought home by her husband. Her state of inebriation steadily increased as the plot unfolded but it never got out of control. Adam Woodward as her husband Henry was ideal as a man who couldn’t understand what the fuss was about until confronted by two policemen who accused him of all manner of personal indiscretions. These two characters were superbly played by Dominic Holmes (Davenport) and Craig Hobson (Slater) as they slowly got dragged into aiding the intended spending if the cash. The Perkins’ friends Vic and Betty Johnson, who only came round for a quiet evening meal, were also dragged reluctantly into the situation. These characters, played by Rod Bissett and Suzy Donnelly, complemented each other perfectly and worked well with the Perkins. Sam Evans (Bill) kept appearing and causing even more chaos.
The speed of dialogue delivery couldn’t be faulted and this was really impressive when a multitude of aliases were taken on by the cast much to the consternation of Slater. In addition to this aspect the facial expressions and body language of all the players should be commended.
Towards the end of the play we knew that the briefcases were going to get mixed up but there was a neat twist by the Passer (Dale Roberts) to conclude events.
Well done to everyone on stage, backstage and the production team for providing a most enjoyable evening’s entertainment!
