This play was the first of the new season and I was looking forward to the warm welcome I always get at this venue.

I had not seen this play before, nor in fact any by the same author, Terence Frisby. The plot revolves around infidelity, marital breakup, revenge and comeuppance and is centred around the relationship between two couples whose lives become intertwined when David Pilkington’s character Piers Boston, in the age old manner, runs off with his much younger secretary Larissa, played by Sara Ashton. The remaining pair, Piers wife Rosie and Larissa’s husband Darren get together and plan to get their revenge on the philandering Piers, with surprising consequences!

In the opening scene we meet Rosie Boston who was very ably played by Andrea Nixon, with just the right level of sarcastic humour and intellectual superiority. We also meet Darren Tucker, played very well by Robin Brown – a great performance with naivety and cunning his main character traits.

We eventually meet Piers, delivered with great characterisation by Dave Pilkington – had this been panto I could almost imagine the female members of the audience booing his arrival on stage. Also here we meet Larissa, the ‘new bird’ again fantastic characterisation by Sara Ashton, very believable as the dizzy blond. All four players interacted very well with each other were able to convey some of the deeper themes which flow through this piece.

The set was excellent and really conveyed well the luxury London apartment it represented, well done Geoff! There were some nice touches and attention to detail with all aspects of this production and I very much enjoyed the performance

Barbara Cilgram & Jean Leigh did a fine job with this production, which had some complicated themes to convey. I’m looking forward to the next production by this excellent and consistent society.
