I was delighted to be asked to review Frozen Jr for KATSACT, my first experience of this wonderful Society.  We were made very welcome, and were able to talk to the Director and other company members about the ethos of the Society, the children who appeared on stage, and the various abilities that are integrated into the way of working.  It was enlightening and thrilling to know the detail that goes into a KATSACT production.

I liked the set, with back projection and moveable flats to depict the different scenes, for me there were some unnecessary blackouts, which interrupted the flow, but I loved the change of seasons, the ice suddenly appearing on the backdrop etc, which made it all seem real.

Lighting was good, and I understand that one of the cast, Aiden Gallagher, was given the chance to help on the technical side of things, which was, I’m sure, a great experience for him, and one he undertook well.  Mic cues were a little awry at times, but mainly sound was good.

Costumes mostly looked suitable for the characters, and were colourful.  I loved the lights on the wings they created a beautiful effect.

The girls who covered the roles of Anna and Elsa in their various stages of life were all extremely good, and on the night I attended Jess Sarll and Sophie Deane were outstanding, much expression and understanding of the role – well done.

I also particularly liked the pairing of Riley Maynard and Leo Stewart – a genuine relationship.

Elodie Beauchamp was a delightful Olaf, good stage presence and lovely facial expressions, while Josh North as Hans created a very believable character.

It is always a shame that with so many performers it is impossible to name them all, but it was a pleasure to be asked to meet the cast afterwards,  and I would suggest that for future productions where there are dual roles, the NODA Rep sees both casts, to get an overall view.  I did note the performances of children who covered the principal roles in Team Snow at other performances, and could see their ability from how they acted and sang in ensemble roles, so I was able to get a good feeling of Snow versus Ice!

My thanks to KATSACT for their hospitality, we thoroughly enjoyed the production, and the ethos of the Society, showing such care and understanding of their children.  A lovely evening.
