This was my very first viewing of Frozen JR, obviously I, like most of the people on the planet, recognise some of the songs and the character names but it was still very much uncharted territory.
The set was very simple and used mainly projections, it worked very well in the space. Free standing flats moved forwards acted like wings but were also able to be moved and utilised in different ways eg. a doorway or a hiding space. The lighting was sympathetic to the piece and a lot of the time cast an atmospheric blue icy glow. Sound was fairly good throughout with the exception of one small character in a wig but I strongly suspect from the set of the wig when the character appeared that it had been properly fitted but then "fixed" by tiny hands which moved the mic out of place so not actually a "typical" sound issue.
Layla Penny played young Anna, Hannah Donaghugh played middle Anna with Lauryn Pickles taking over as main Anna. They all did a good solid job, but Lauryn as main Anna was an absolute delight to watch. She immersed herself completely and became Anna - at no point did she let her characterisation drop even when she wasn't the focal point on the stage. Her vocals MD'd by Paul Lawton were clear, tone was good and connection with the audience was excellent. Young Elsa was tackled by Isla Hughes, middle Elsa by Olivia Williams then main Elsa was taken on by Lois Ridgeway. Lois gave a convincing performance but at times I felt her dialogue was a little rushed, she gave some nice vocals for the iconic "Let It Go". Olaf (Isobel McConnell), Sven (Daisy McConnell) and Kristoff (Harrison Bramhall-Knowles) were a great comedy trio on stage, they all engaged the audience, delivered dialogue and vocals clearly, were confident and instantly recognisable in their costumes. Daniel Eccles played two parts - King Agnarr and Oaken. As Oaken he completely entertained the whole audience, he threw himself himself into the part and sang and danced up a storm, his facial expressions were a delight and his comedic timing spot on.
The ensemble supported the Principals excellently, we could hear the singing, see people taking an interest in what was going on on stage and no one was fazed by the audience being so close, they all looked to be having the best time performing. The choreography was in keeping with the abilities of all the cast and was executed well. Most of the costumes were made in house and were a visual delight.
Thank you, The Drama Dept for introducing me to Frozen JR, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Myself and my guest also thank you for your hospitality and the reserved parking space. I look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
