This was the first of the 2 concerts presented one after the other by E.M.T for this years Festival Fringe. The programme was primarily aimed at a younger audience who would be familiar with most if not all of the musical numbers taken from their well known shows and films.
‘Belle’ (Beauty and the Beast) got the show off to a delightful start and set the high standard of singing and choreography which continued through the rest of the evenings performance. The ‘Doll On a Music Box’ (Chitty Bang Bang) with her clockwork moves and sweet singing came next and this was followed by the lively, boisterous ‘Friend Like Me’ (Aladdin). By this stage the company had the children in the audience well engaged with many mouthing the words or quietly singing along. ’Mother Knows Best’ (Tangled) was sung charmingly and directly to the youngsters sending a clear message which the children appeared to absorb!
The entire programme was varied and flawless with the many soloists and ensemble singers in excellent voice. The choreography too was outstanding with great attention paid to detailed movement and precison. Every musical number was a hit and performed brilliantly by this very talented cast. The diversity of mood was evident too. ‘When You Believe’ (Prince of Egypt) was extremeny emotive as was ‘Once Upon December’ (Anastasia). The stillness and silhouette movement in this number created a wonderful atmosphere.
There were lots of fun numbers in this concert but perhaps one of the highlights for the young people was ‘King of the Swingers’ (The Jungle Book) when the children were invited to the stage to take part in the dance which they did with enthusiasm.
I have not mentioned all the individual numbers or soloists but suffice to say that this was a real team effort with everyone on stage a star. The high level of energy was maintained throughout and the concluding ‘Step In Time’ (Mary Poppins) was dynamic and electric leaving me wondering how this cast would still have the voice and energy for the concert Anthems which was to follow. A fantastic ‘Fringe Fantasmic’ which I enjoyed immensely.
