This musical version, by Mark Baron and Jeffrey Jackson, is faithful to Mary Shelley's well known haunting novel. It proved to be a challenge but the numerous scenes were well staged and intelligent use was made of the theatre's revolve.
Victor Frankenstein, played by Tom Pear, is a brilliant young scientist who creates a human of his own design who instead turns out to be a horrifying monster – not the usual type we have come to expect, but a flesh and blood man - The Creature – terrifying in appearance who becomes cunning and thirsts for revenge on his creator. Geoff Legan played him brilliantly, was well controlled, and kept in character throughout. Tom Pear gave a realistic and moving performance as Victor. Shelley Ann Rivers gave a fine performance as his love interest, Elizabeth Lavenza, as she sang of her fears and worries.
Other principal roles, particularly David Brown as Frankenstein's father and Rafe Clarke as William his younger brother who was murdered at an early age by “The Creature”, were well cast and good support came from the rest of the company.
Minimal scenery and good lighting effects added to the atmosphere of this haunting piece of theatre.
