Truth to tell, I have never ever heard of this show at all. But, I know all about it now! For the uninitiated, it is a hilarious send-up of well known Broadway shows. Take a well known show, present its main characters . . . and give the show’s famous songs a new and very funny lyric – and you have “something different” for the audience to enjoy! I guarantee, that the audience I was part of did not know what was on offer on stage that night but, by the end of the performance, everyone was very enthusiastic about what they had just seen! Any society looking for something “new” to perform, this is it! No scenery is required, just a keen company, plus costumes to match the show items. Broughty’s show was fast, zippy, and moved along at a great pace. There was much laughter from the audience and, no wonder, when for instance, you take a great show like Les Miserables and parody it’s great musical numbers – Bring Him Home had our talented singer singing It’s Too High!; and then there was a lady singing On My Phone, complete with mobile phone! Sondheim’s tricky Into The Woods became Into The Words, with clever usage of alphabet cards spelling out words. “Fiddler’s” famous opening chorus received a new treatment and became Ambition, lustily sung by the full company. Then there was Annie informing the audience that she was going to be 50 Tomorrow, and another singing Mucus Of The Night from Phantom! And so it went on! One had to know the musicals being performed and one’s ear had to be carefully tuned to listen to the hilarious lyrics to really appreciate what was going on! Other shows to get the “treatment” were Hello, Dolly! and Cats! No principal singer names are required because this show was a complete company show and everyone deserves the plaudits. Broughty obviously enjoyed performing this and has to be congratulated for pulling it off and bringing this Tayside premiere successfully to their audience and giving us a great night of music and laughter.
