This performance was given by the Youth of Stafford Operatic Society.
A very good choice of show for this highly competent and talented company of young people. It was a sparkling production, with all the principals giving good characterisation of their roles, which they maintained throughout the production. It gave the younger members chance to shine in the ensemble numbers, whilst offering more challenging roles for the performers with more experience.
Special mention must be made of Sam Simkin who played Willard, the country yokel who befriends Ren McCormack – the new boy in Bomont (Tom Slade). Sam pitched his performance just right without going over the top. I cannot recall seeing a better performance of this difficult role. I understand that this was his first performance with the group – what an asset he is going to be.
Tom Slade sang and moved well as the Chicago teenager who is intent on brightening up the small mid-west town. He was matched with feisty Becky Lyle as the Minister’s rebellious daughter Ariel, who he steals from the cool bad boy Chuck (Josh Russell).
Willard’s girl Rusty, together with teenage friends, Urleen and Wendy Jo (Alex Smith, Kelly Slade and Amber Walton) gave delightful performances.
There was a very energetic scene in the school gym when the company were able to show off their gymnastic skills.
The singing of the whole company was disciplined. They obviously all responded very well to Laura’s tuition.
The scene changes were very slick and the costumes were appropriate
It was good to hear so many 80’s hits performed with energy and enthusiasm by the young cast in big routines.
