Sondheim’s Follies is a very difficult piece to execute but this was a brave attempt nevertheless, and there were element’s where by imagination willing you did feel at times part of a reunion, albeit not for me. The staging was left floundering in so much that stage and the floor area appeared isolated from each other and therefore the cast were not seen to be wondering around reminiscing of the bygone age they had all once shared, but left seated and talking amongst themselves sometimes for far too long. The pairing of the main cast was convincing enough, with some good acting from Phyllis Stone (Julie Gaskell) and Sally Plummer (Emma Johnson) The music carried its way through the show beautifully with all the nostalgia of times past under the guidance of Nick Montague. The entrance of the Follies Girls was special with some strong singing from Hattie Walker (Jackie Burgess) and Carlotta Campion. The most beautiful singing from the Heidi Schiller (Barbara Turner) and young Heidi (Caitlin Sherwood) soared far and above the whole show absolutely brilliantly. I was at a loss as to understand the costumes, especially the big production numbers
I’d like to thank you for your hospitality during the evening many thanks
