What a refreshing change, this American piece by John A Penzotti, was a joy to watch, and the audience reaction throughout echoed my feelings. A story of five elderly ladies looking back, with wisdom and some wisecracks, on their well lived lives. There were painful memories, happy recollections and sometimes sad scenes.
The five ladies were brought vividly to life by a very talented cast in David Jones` successful production. Outstanding performance by Angela Swift as Anna, Regina Repton as Gladys, Liz Woolley as La La. Patricia Church as Rose, and Karen Jones as Eva. They all deserve a collective Oscar, maintaining their various characters supremely well, hilarious and poignant at the same time.
The second act, this time set in heaven, but still with the park benches, we were introduced to the men, and one woman, with whom they were reunited. We had fine performances from Aidan Repton, Jack Woolley, Carl McGarrigle, Graham Swift and not forgetting Debbie Barfield.
The whole cast deserve great credit for such an inspired production. I would have liked to see green park benches, but hey, who noticed?
