Beethoven’s only Opera was first performed in 1805 without success, revived in 1806 then in 1815 with additional changes, it contains a wonderful storyline and powerful music.
Stage Director Kevin John's production was a great showpiece and well received by the audience. Accomplished by a talented cast both singing and acting. Marzelline (Susanna Buckle) the Head Jailor's daughter was delightful, her singing and acting displayed her talents. Jaquino (Guy Withers) her suitor, tried hard to woo her to no avail. Guy’s singing and acting were very well suited to the part. The rich baritone voice of Gregor Kowalski in the part of Rocco the head jailor and his acting ability did justice to the role.
Pizarro (Paul Waite) displayed his acting ability as the vicious Prison Governor whose main intention is to kill the political prisoner Florestan. James Kinsella demonstrated a highly commendable quality of dramatic acting and singing. His wife Leonore (Erika Mädi Jones) disguised as a boy, Fidelio trying to find her husband played the dual role very well. Jonathon Barry was suitably regal as the minister of state Don Fernando
The prisoners, soldiers, guards and townspeople gave excellent support to the principals.
Musical Director Francis Griffin conducted the orchestra, complementing the singers. The Trumpet played by Charlotte Buchanan was well worth a mention. The Prisoners chorus was excellent.
Stage Manager Dawn along with her many assistants. Set designed by Kevin John, constructed and painted by Roland Couvela and Tony Bundy assisted by members.
A very polished and moving performance of this dramatic opera.
