Here we had a director who had looked far beyond the basic story of 'Fiddler' and had researched the history of violence against the Jewish community. The show was set in a Krakhow ghetto in 1942 and props were based on the chairs now standing in Krakhow square to remind people that anyone can become a victim. It was fascinating to see how these chairs were used for various props throughout the show. This made for simple set changes done by the cast members with very little detraction from the on stage performance. The usual excellent lighting completed a wonderful set. The entire cast provided us with a moving story of a community desperately trying to hold on to their beliefs and traditions in a changing world. They performed as a community of people with different village characters portrayed. Principal and company singing was outstanding with a sympathetic orchestra to accompany them. Nothing was lost from the story of the show by moving it into a different time and we still had the dry humour of Tevye and his friends and the moving moments when his three daughters fly in the face of tradition. The plus of doing the show in this way is it really gives you something to think about when you come away. An excellent production and one to be proud of.
