The opening of the show saw the stage set with an old house in the middle of the stage with Becky Reeve, dressed in red, a flash of brilliant colour sat on the roof joined by the rest of the chorus. A moving and energetic Tradition that set up the show, and it carried on never disappointing at all. Great orchestration from Alistair Hume and the rest of the orchestra that never seemed to miss a beat throughout the rest of the show, really adding to the performance and efforts of the cast.
Martin Mansfield was a great Tevya, a big role, ably backed up by the brilliant Suzanne Teather as Golde who seemed to have one over on Tevya throughout, captured the Jewish “I’m in Charge really” Wife really well. A joy to watch the interaction.
The daughters ( Laura Ward, Nicole McNally and Issy Whitlock) played their parts with confidence and aplomb, beautifully sung giving us real belief in the changing fortunes in their individual circumstances. Dan Ventura played an effective and believable Perchik, and Callum Allton as the quiet Motel the tailor really held the story together with all that was going on around.
All the cast really looked as if they were enjoying themselves (even the nasty Russian Soldiers) and this came over to the auditorium giving us a really enjoyable evening, where no one went home not being thoroughly entertained. I particularly enjoyed the Chava Ballet scene behind the scyce.
The costumes befit the show well and the set was used effectively
A couple of slight points to mention. The scene changes were longer than they could have been, with the stage being left in the dark after the incidental music had finished and the crew still working, seemed to break the continuity a bit, but the bulk of the audience would not have picked up on this, plus the beards (especially Lazer Wolfe, who seemed to have problems with his!
Hardly a complaint as I really really enjoyed the show. Well done.
