What better way of celebrating the festive season on a Sunday afternoon so close to Christmas than enjoying afternoon tea and cake and attending Tettenhall Operatic Company’s annual concert entitled,’ Festive Fayre’.

The programme opened with the choir singing, ‘Starlight,’ which ensured the concert started off at a quick and stimulating pace. Live music is about atmosphere, energy, and a sense of intimacy and this was certainly achieved this afternoon. The hall had a full house; the choir ensemble in two rows facing the crowd, with the pianist positioned centrally. Julian Souter guided us through the programme in an upbeat fashion and made introductions as appropriate, informing us of where composer, John Rutter’s melodic contributions were. There was physical proximity with the audience who were seated round tables, with active involvement promoted when inviting all to join in the singing of some traditional carols. The performers moved in and out of the performance space which ensured variety of song, as well as opportunity to hear individuals as soloists and those performing in duets, to deliver some enchanting music.

Peter Smith must be credited with all aspects of the afternoon’s musical arrangements, for this was indeed a feast of music. There was much in evidence to show what a great deal of hard work it had taken to prepare for this concert. Music selected from the classical period to music of this century, was well suited to the capabilities of the performers in most cases, leading the choral ensemble performing some spectacular songs, with some elaborate harmonies all engendering the Christmas spirit, providing a warm and friendly tone.

Skilful piano accompanist, David Easto, played so beautifully and the choir worked hard following Peter Smith’s lead and direction, captivating the audience with some awesome singing. This was especially reflected in the rendition of,’ African Gloria,’ and the number that would offer any choir challenge,’Quodibet of Carols, both much appreciated by the audience. In the second half, the ensemble singing, ’Candlelight Chorus,’ presented in my mind, the concept of angels amongst us singing. ‘When Mary Sang her Lullaby,’ was sung by ladies only and I found this version too, very moving; so well-rehearsed. simply faultless. ‘Somewhere Out There,’ warmed my heart, for this is a song with powerful effect and it was done so well. Individual performers, including Lydia Goodall, Sheila Smith and Stephen Harper mesmerised us with their quality singing and assured stage presence. Their performances lead us to have high expectations and they don’t fail; Lydia’s rendition of,’ Song to the Seals,’ was magnificent, sung in Gaelic. The concert was a delight and by the end of the afternoon hearts were warmed, the nostalgia palpable, a Christmas feeling celebrated.

Thank you for inviting me.
