In 2000 the British Film Institute named ‘Fawlty Towers’ as the best television series of all time. Some 30 years after being filmed, stage adaptations still draw large audiences, which was the case with this production. As an indication of the show’s popularity, although coinciding with the televised opening of the 2012 Olympic Games, SKAMPS first-night performance attracted a capacity crowd who revelled in the great comedic experience presented to them.
All the well-cast principal players displayed great characterisation in their respective roles. Basil Fawlty (Andrew Cleaver) and his wife Sybil ( Nicola Sandall) participated in sharp verbal skirmishes that were very well handled, with waitress Polly (Jess Thomas) remaining loyal to and supporting Basil, whilst poor Manuel (Dave Middleton) received Basil's many lambastings as the hapless waiter from Barcelona. Terry (Steve Williams) came across as a quick-witted cockney with limited culinary skills and the Major (Mick Cockerill) performed with distinction. Miss Tibbs (Joanne Henderson) and Miss Gatsby (Shirin Fenn) were really believable dotty spinsters. All those in supporting roles made their significant contributions with enthusiasm.
The innovative set was very impressive and tight direction from Sharon Middleton ensured that the stage space was really well used. Set changes were executed unobtrusively by an efficient stage crew. The players were most appropriately costumed and delivered their lines competently. The rousing applause from the audience at the end of this highly entertaining performance was justly deserved. Great fun - congratulations to all who were involved!
