This eagerly-awaited production did not disappoint - nearly two years in the making, it was joyous to see this excellent company back on stage once again. The pandemic has been hard on everyone, particularly for young actors, who just wanted to be part of such a remarkable company, celebrating 86 years of theatre!

Roald Dahl's 'Fantastic Mr Fox' was a perfect choice, adapted for the stage by David Wood. The story is typical of Dahl's work - plenty of zany characters, both animal and human, tales of good over evil with glimpses of countryside flora and fauna! Mr Fox has been upsetting three farmers by stealing food from their farms and they try to kill him - but he outwits them at every turn by devising a plan to keep his family and his friends fed!  He promises them a sumptuous feast - does he succeed?

The production was lovingly directed by Janine Walker who had obviously worked hard with the cast - they were all confident and their dialogue was clear - I heard every word...  Mr Badger (James Hart) was also the Narrator: he guided us through the many scenes with enthusiasm. Mr Fox was played by Maisie Bayliss, a promising actor, who showed excellent acting ability - she was more than ably assisted by Mrs Fox and the Fox family. Boggis (Graham James)(, Bunce (Naomi Kelly) and Bean (Sam Spall) who played the three farmers with brilliant comedy - how we all loved to 'boo' them when they discussed how (and failed!) to kill Mr Fox. The rest of the company worked very hard and kept up their various characters - the enjoyment came right across to the audience.

I loved the dance sequences (reminded me of my school-days - many years ago!) and especially the tap routine - well done, the two tappers! The musical sequences, which I understand were supplied by the rightsholders, added just the right touch.

The high standard on stage was more than supported by the talented backstage crew - nicely designed sets, props, lighting and sound - with clever touches of audio-visual effects. I have to give a huge credit to Jane Curtin (Costume Co-ordination) for her exceptional costumes - this really added to the professional look of the production, enhanced by excellent make-up. I thought that this was designed very well - the animal make-up did not disguise the human face beneath, which is as it should be.

I just have to mention the animated chickens in the barn set - what a clever touch!

In all, a lovely production for LCT's return to the Carriageworks - congratulations to you all - and yes, Mr Fox did give his friends a 'sumptuous' feast - and we all enjoyed it!
