This was an excellent production by the young people of ‘Next Generation’. All credit to Daniel Mc Creedy on his directorial debut, he had clearly worked very hard to achieve the quality on show.
The story, well known, follows the ups and downs of students at a High School of performing arts in New York. Here we meet all the school characters, and follow their trials and tribulations.
There were some lovely performances, from the leading characters, Elizabeth Corless was a sultry Carmen, very much admired by the boys, Matthew Goodill as Nick, Josh Pattison as the ebullient Joe Vegas and Matthew Johnson as Shlomo, all three very convincing. Other parts were played by Sarah Deans as Mabel, Abbie Johnson as Serena, Hannah Mc Lean as ‘Lambchops’. Star of the show, for me was Katie Weir as Tyrone, she was terrific, playing this would be male role. The young company were very ably supported by Kim Fisher, Victoria Sharples, Jack Pike and Daniel O’Hagan, as members of Staff.
There were some lovely musical solos and ensembles.I thought the duet with Kim and Victoria was brilliant, and the orchestra was well led by Mark Hazzard. The dance routines were very slick and precise, praise to the choreography team of Adam and Aimee, I know how hard they worked.
On a very small downside for me, I felt at times, the sound might have been slighty lower.Im quite deaf, and found it at times too overpowering. Also, would leg warmers not have been popular at schools of performing arts in the eighties.
All in all a very good evening’s entertainment from this talented company. Thanks for the invitation, and as always the society hospitality to Phyllis and myself was fantastic.
