The young cast were full of energy and enthusiasm in this iconic 1980s musical. The story is about an intake of students at the New York High School for Performing Arts and we follow their very differing journeys.
In the ensemble the singing and dance numbers were excellent with everyone obviously enjoying the experience.
The Actors – Nick Piazza (Sonni Mortimer) trying to move from acting in advertising to serious theatre. Serena Katz (Daisy Brickwood) loves acting but interested in Nick. Joe (Jose) Vegas who brings comedy to the role.
The Musicians – Schlomo Metzenbaum (Harry Moxon) a talented musician who sets up a rock band. Goodman King (Lia Wretham) a musician in Schlomo’s band. Grace Lamb (Evie Pearson) a rock chick also in the band.
The Dancers – Tyrone Jackson (Caleb Bohanna) rebellious as he is dyslexic but won’t admit to it. Iris Kelly (Becca Dakin) a talented dancer and helps Tyrone. Mabel Washington (Lily Balmforth) a dancer struggling with her weight.
The Faculty – Miss Esther Sherman (Jessica Barlow) who loves her students but comes down hard on them. Miss Greta Ball (Emma Wardle) dance teacher who is protective of her students. Miss Myers (Kira Chadwick) drama teachers encouraging her students. Miss Sheinkopf (Lauren Talbot) music tutor who loves classical music but not rock & roll.
All the characters played the varying characters and their experiences very well, but I have a special mention for Emily Balmforth whose portrayal of Carmen Diaz was exceptional from the confident dancer to finish as a drug addict who dies in the show. The graduation show song dedicated by the students to Carmen “Bring on Tomorrow” was a particular favourite with the audience.
The simple set with the metallic staging and steps to upper platform worked perfectly thanks to the Stage Manager Edwin Kirkwood & Crew. The lighting by CS technical added to the atmosphere. Costumes by Debbie Jones were colourful and bright.
The dancing and singing were a credit to Choreographer Rachael Kirkwood and Musical Director Laura Glaholm.
Congratulations to Director James Creegan
Well done to all concerned I thoroughly enjoyed the evening
