Oh what a triumph, oh what a show! South Downe has gone to town over the death of an actress called Eva Peron. Once again John-Paul McCrohon has brought the best out of this extremely talented company that amazes me.
This was a truly first rate production. The principals were excellent, with this sometimes difficult score.  Danny Owen gave a good characterisation of the bewildered Juan Peron, totally overshadowed by his mistress/wife Eva.  Matt Sackman gave an engaging and alluring performance as the tango singer Magaldi, and Rebecca North sang and acted the role of Peron’s ousted mistress perfectly.
This brings us to the two main protagonists. First Steve Reading as the narrator Che! This is a huge part for anyone, and he sang and acted perfectly, giving shade and light to the performance, ensuring that nobody had any doubt about Eva Peron’s true character.  Not that they would have any doubt because of Samantha Kelly’s stunning performance in the title role.  Not only did she sing well, but she acted all the songs in such a way that Eva’s cynicism and manipulative nature came clearly across – which is something that professional performances often seem to gloss over. She was seldom off stage and when she was present her charisma shone through.
The principals were splendidly supported by a strong company. All the singing and dancing ensemble pieces worked exceptionally well and could not be faulted. There was a great eye to detail in setting the mood for each part of Eva’s brief, yet complex life.
Musical direction under Alan Pring was faultless bringing the necessary light and shade. As was Sara Harkness’s choreography.
The set was simple, but totally suitable for the piece, and the costumes were in keeping with period and the production.
The lighting design and effects all worked excellently and assisted in creating a moving and powerful atmosphere.
The sound was well balanced throughout.
In short, this truly was a memorable evening at the theatre!
