Chesterfield Operatic Society is the first musical group in Derbyshire to secure the rights to perform Evita. Eva Peron was the second wife of Argentine President Juan Peron and the story follows her early life, rise to power, charity work and her eventual death. Obviously to succeed with ‘Evita’ you have to have someone who can more than cope with this extremely demanding and challenging role. Sue Higgins was just that person. She convincingly captured the emotional highs and lows of the role superbly. Her singing, acting and dancing were impeccable and together with her stunning costumes and wigs created what was a compelling, captivating and charismatic portrayal of this iconic woman - brilliant! The outstandingly powerful singing voice of Davron Hicks was truly in evidence especially in ‘Oh What a Circus’ and ‘High Flying Adored’ and he prowled the stage with a such a commanding presence whilst providing narration and observations. Another strong performance came from Danny Winson who strikingly epitomised the authoritative bearing of President Peron. Andy Moore was splendid as the sleazy night-club singer, Magaldi, and Jessica Sharratt was enchanting as Peron’s discarded mistress, beautifully singing ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’ with such sensitivity. Effective support came from the actions of chorus members in various roles also from their first-rate singing and dancing. Producing any show is a great team effort but for this show in particular, the role of the Musical Director is paramount and well deserved praise must indeed go to Jonathan Francis. Congratulations also to Phil Simcox as Director, along with Julie Metcalfe and Paula Wilson, Choreographers, not forgetting Chris Flint, who couldn’t have had many relaxing moments as Rehearsal Accompanist. A great show, well done to everyone involved.
