This was a brilliant take-off of the Eurovision Song Contest with the Hosts, the Reporters and the Announcers and the participating countries carefully studied and personified by the hard-working cast. With the well known formula to follow and everyone comfortable in their roles, both the audience and the cast could relate with each other and enjoy the humour of the contest as it progressed.
Glenn Allan and Jillian Cunningham scored well off each other as the Hosts, with Jillian appearing in numerous costume changes. A dazzling array of Announcers introduced the Contestants for each of the ten countries represented and each group caught splendidly the national characteristics of each country with its own foibles and prejudices – just like the real thing! Audience participation extended to actual voting for the songs and I am sure there could be surprises in each evening’s results – even for the cast and the production team. Only the real Terry Wogan was missing!
Harlequin has run up a further “first” for District 4 with this clever and appealing show. Add to the talented cast – far too numerous to mention individually – the imaginative production team and a versatile band and one can appreciate just how this Company evolves and sustains consistently grand shows.
