Tayside Opera's production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at The Space Theatre demonstrates exactly why the company has remained a vital part of Dundee's cultural landscape for almost six decades. Bringing this deeply emotional piece to local audiences is an ambitious undertaking, but one that was met with confidence, passion and considerable musical achievement.
At its heart, Eugene Onegin is a story of opportunities missed, emotions suppressed and regrets that arrive too late. Tayside Opera captured these themes beautifully, allowing the relationships between the principal characters to develop naturally and compellingly. Tatiana's journey from shy, romantic dreamer to poised and dignified woman was particularly affecting, while Onegin's gradual realisation of what he has lost provided the opera's devastating emotional climax.
The cast delivered performances of sincerity and commitment throughout. Congratulations to Brannon Liston-Smith in the title role, Rowan Gillard as Lensky, and the wonderful casts led by Jolanta Kudra/Corina Ignat as Tatiana and Jolanda Grijpstra/Giselle Nascimento Dias as Olga. The supporting roles and chorus also deserve praise for bringing energy and atmosphere to the social scenes, helping to create a vivid sense of place and community.
Special congratulations also to Music Director Richard Johnston and Director Michael Scott for bringing Tchaikovsky's masterpiece to life with such vision and musical excellence.
The intimate setting of The Space Theatre allowed the audience to connect closely with the characters, making the opera's moments of heartbreak feel immediate and personal. Lensky's tragic fate carried genuine emotional weight, while the final confrontation between Tatiana and Onegin was handled with restraint and maturity, allowing Tchaikovsky's music to communicate the pain and longing that words cannot express.
Musically, the production was richly rewarding. Tchaikovsky's score is filled with soaring melodies, sweeping orchestral colours and moments of intimate reflection, all of which were sensitively realised. The orchestra supported the singers admirably.
Visually, the production made effective use of the theatre space, proving that grand opera does not require grand surroundings to make a powerful impact. The staging remained focused on the storytelling, with costumes and design choices supporting the narrative without distracting from it.
A moving, heartfelt and musically accomplished production, Eugene Onegin stands as another impressive achievement for Tayside Opera and a reminder of the high-quality operatic performances being created here in Dundee. Bravo to all
