In 1933 a group of people got together to form Sutton Coldfield Operatic Society.  Now Eighty years latter Sutton Coldfield Music Theatre Company shows no signs of slowing down.  Encore was a mammoth undertaking with some 31 numbers from shows they had performed over the eighty years, including a number from their very first production, Maritana.  From the opening words by Paul Lumsden to the closing number from Jesus Christ Superstar.   In between each of the production numbers a visual display screen at the rear of the stage told us which decade we were looking at and things that went on during that period.  Also in between the numbers were treated to various snippets of things going on, Maggie Thatcher, the Coronation, the introduction of mobile phones and even Dr Who received a mention.  But the audiences favourite was ‘Pac man’. All of the musical numbers were sung really well and the chorography was superb.  I particularly enjoyed ‘Anything Goes’, it was a joy to see the whole coming tapping, and also ‘Three Little Maids’ from The Mikado.  I must mention Ed Hill who performed ‘Anthem’ from Chess, a wonderful version.  Sound and lighting were really good.  And the costumes could not have been better.  Sheila Pearson kept the orchestra at just the right level.  SCMTC and Helen, you have another hit on your hands.
