Christmas has certainly arrived in Barnsley as Take2 Theatre Company presented a first class production of Elf the musical. The production was full of colour, with great costumes and wonderful performances. On the night I attended, the theatre was full of excited children, waiting to see and hear the story of Buddy the Elf. That excitement went up 100%  as soon as the curtain rose and there he was, Santa Claus. Mel White, was the most perfect Santa, and his delivery of the lines and his telling of Buddy’s story, had the audience gripped.

The role of Buddy was played to an exceptionally high standard by Jake Thompson. This role is a most difficult role to play, as the character has to have child like characteristics, be able to sing, dance and capture the audiences hearts. Jake’s energy was off the scale, and I was exhausted just watching him! His solo, the worlds greatest dad, was an absolute joy to listen too. Charlotte McCamley was a wonderful Jovie. Her portrayal of the Christmas hating leading lady was on point and displayed many emotions, particularly in the number, Don’t Fall In Love With An Elf.

Karl Brennan- Collis, once again showed what a powerhouse of a performer he is with his interpretation of Buddy’s Dad, Walter Hobbs. From disbelief that he has fathered an ‘Elf’ to growing to love Buddy was a joy to watch. I still go cold when he joins in with the ‘Christmas Song’ - stunning. Nicola Long played Walter’s long suffering wife, Emily, and her number with Michael, superbly played by Issac Steer and Harry Thomas was a delight to the ear.

The major principals were well supported a by a very strong ensemble plus excellent cameo roles performed by Sue Lomas as Deb, Dean Watson as Greenway who I certainly wouldn’t want to meet dowm a dark alley way. Matthews & Chadwick by Dominic Jones and Josh Steer respectively and Steven Brennan Collis, who gave a comedic interpretation of the Manager at Macy’s department store.

Congratulations to the production team Julie Whitfield, Melissa Hill, Ian Price and Dave Gilson. It was the early Christmas presen  that carried on giving and got everyone in the Christmas spirit. Im sure Santas sleigh will fly with no problems this Christmas Eve.
