A real galaxy of stars lit up the stage for the opening night of Gang Show 2015 with very little evidence of first night nerves. Edinburgh Gang Show is the biggest annual theatrical show starring young people in the U.K. and the 250 strong cast should certainly be very proud of their achievements.
A bright, lively opening led by a strong female vocalist got the show off to a great start and the immediate impact was that here was a group of young people who oozed enthusiasm, energy and dedication.
The whole show was a real spectacle with some stunning, colourful costumes and terrific lighting effects. The core of this most varied programme is song and dance. Well chosen soloists sang with passion particularly ‘ The Dust Of Life’ and ‘All The Way From Memphis’ but the support given by this huge ensemble of voices was powerful and vocally very strong indeed.
Some difficult, creative choreography, including an excellent tap routine, was executed with precision with everyone on stage putting heart and soul into the action. The Junior Gang were quite endearing in their numbers never put off by any minor mishaps. Slick, crisp movement and confidently sung musical numbers kept the show moving along at a good steady pace.
Of course big production numbers are interspersed with some extremely clever and topical sketches. We come to expect Hearts/Hibs rivalry and a dig at S.N.P. ‘An Orphan’s Tale’ was a really clever adaptation of ‘Annie’ with Nicola Sturgeon the ‘orphan’ The lyrics were most amusing and delivered confidently by the youngsters..
Comedy was also at it’s best on a visit to Prince Street with the guide humorously pointing out the various landmarks and indeed the trams are here to stay!
This extremely talented group of young people gave us an evening of exuberant, first class entertainment culminating in the traditional rousing finale.
A production of this standard not only requires commitment from those on stage but from a patient, dedicated production team, technical crew, wardrobe team and many many helpers behind the scenes. I admire and congratulate them all.
Once again Gang Show delivered an impressive show giving so many young people the opportunity not only to gain confidence by performing in a huge theatre but also to learn the importance of team work, camaraderie and respect, skills which will be beneficial throughout life.
An excellent evening of fun which as always was great pleasure to attend. Very well done indeed.
