I received a very warm welcome from Michelle and Marc for this debut performance of a brand‑new musical play written by their own Abbie Livermore. Dukes Diner is a lively, affectionate slice of popular youth culture, full of character-driven humour, relationship tangles, and toe‑tapping musical numbers. The company clearly embraced the fun of the piece, and the audience responded with enthusiasm throughout the evening.
Duke – Richard Gregg and Dolly – Val Gregg - This real-life husband and wife pairing brought charm, humour, and strong stagecraft to their roles as the hardworking diner owners. Their rock ’n’ roll dancing was a delight, and they anchored the show with warmth and energy as they navigated the chaos their customers brought through the door.
Chad – Marc Skinner and Shirly – Michelle Marshall - A couple with a turbulent relationship, played with commitment and emotional contrast. Mark captured Chad’s wandering eye and swagger, while Michelle gave Shirly a sincerity and vulnerability that made the audience root for her. Their storyline provided both tension and humour as we wondered whether their relationship would survive.
Simon – James Foot and Fran – Elloise Fisher - James brought cheeky charm and great comic timing to Simon, while Elloise played Fran with sweetness and spark. Together they created a lively, fun pairing who clearly enjoyed their roles and brought the audience along with them.
Penny – Sophie Rowberry and Ernie – Chris Wallis - Sophie’s lovely singing voice and confident characterisation made Penny instantly appealing. Chris’s portrayal of the shy, studious Ernie was beautifully judged—his nervous energy was cleverly sustained and very endearing. Their gentle love story was one of the highlights of the evening.
Rachel – Sarah Kendall - Sarah delivered a bold, confident performance as the glamorous and flirtatious Rachel, playing the role with huge aplomb. Her brief appearance as the WPC was also neatly handled and added to the fun.
Music, Movement & Ensemble - The musical numbers were performed with enthusiasm and supported by interesting choreography that suited the space and the cast. While some performers were more confident vocally than others, the collective energy, fun, and commitment more than carried the songs. The audience clapped along to many of the numbers, clearly enjoying the atmosphere.
Musical highlights included: Wig Wam Bam, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Hound Dog, A Little Party Never Killed Nobody, but every number contributed to the lively, inclusive feel of the evening.
Direction, Design & Production - Abbie Livermore’s writing and situational comedy were charming, with well‑drawn highs and lows in the customers’ antics. Her direction made excellent use of the relatively small performance space, and the set—complete with diner counter, tables, chairs, and a high-profile table with stools—was used creatively and effectively. Lighting by Martin Baines added vibrancy, especially during musical numbers, with colour choices that lifted the stage beautifully. The juke box effect was particularly impressive. Stage Manager Kal Hassan ensured everything ran smoothly, with props such as drinks, food, menus, and cleaning equipment used confidently and naturally by the cast.
Posters by Gunner Graphics and the menu‑style programme designed by Michelle added a professional touch and enhanced the cabaret‑style audience experience. Seating the audience at tables was an excellent choice and suited the production perfectly.
Duke's Diner is a warm, feel‑good musical with heart, humour, and a strong sense of fun. Despite some cast members feeling less confident vocally, the overall performance was spirited, engaging, and full of charm. The audience clearly enjoyed themselves, and the company should be proud of bringing a brand‑new musical to life with such enthusiasm.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening with Langtoft Players.
