In 2016, this company Let The People Sing and again , this year, the Society Let The People Sing and, what followed was a superb cavalcade of songs from musicals past (which I knew) and present (which I didn’t know!). We were treated to excerpts from “West Side Story” with its beautiful song arrangements; a melodic “Lion King”; an outstanding “Rocky Horror Show” and, of course, there was the obligatory “Les Miserables” with its fine melodies soaring out into the theatre auditorium! There were solos, duets, trios, quartets, and a full blooded ensemble all in brilliant singing voice. Sadly, the programme content did not display the names of the singing soloists, so I am unable to mention any names. Suffice to say, each and every soloist was in fine musical form. Among the highlights was a fine Lloyd-Webber selection of his hit songs; a light-hearted and entertaining “Avenue Q” section; and a fine staging of “The Cell Block Tango” from “Chicago”. Comedy came in the shape from “Spamalot” with “The Song That Goes Like This” and the fine duo performing a charming “Taylor The Latte Boy”. Among the “new” shows to get a musical airing were “Wonderland” and “Hamilton” and, throughout all this musical presentation, MD Billy Muir (he of the immaculately coiffured hair!) energetically played the onstage piano and also offered his fine tenor voice to some of the musical numbers. This show with its musical blitz ended with a rousing finale of Jersey Boys songs enjoyed by the enthusiastic audience.
