The junior section of the Opera Group delighted sell-out audiences taking us “under the sea” with Ariel and her aquatic friends in their latest production of Disney’s Little Mermaid Junior, an adaptation of the 2008 Broadway production. The cast collectively displayed the usual abounding energy and enthusiasm throughout the show. As Ariel, the beautiful young little mermaid who longed to leave her ocean home behind to live in the world above, Emily Allen provided a strong performance through song and drama in wanting to be ‘Part of Your World’. Sebastian, the meticulous and anxious crab trying to keep Ariel safe was ably played by Jared Boslem. Alternating as Ariel and Sebastian were Alex Aitchison and Emily Franchi who both provided equally strong performances. Findlay Cook brought great humor as the know-it-all seagull Scuttle and provided a great lead in the fabulous number ‘Human Stuff’ with the Gulls (Ciran Forbes, Jonathan Hayburn and Shae Rafferty), Flounder (Olivia Semple) and Ariel. Lee Heraghty-White demonstrated great comedic timing in his portrayal as the over-the-top Palace Chef Louie, maintaining a French accent throughout. Jack Stewart made an excellent adventurous Prince Eric in capturing Ariel’s heart. Aaron Boslem provided leadership as ruler of the sea with tenderness as the father of Ariel whilst Margaret Kelly was at ease being at the centre of the villainous plot as the cunning and devious Ursula in her attempts to get Ariel’s voice in order for her to become human. All remaining principals supported the company extremely well. Costumes were spectacular and complemented the set which was creatively designed and constructed by the President, Joe Totten. However, a special mention must be made to the dedicated production team for drilling the company to achieve such a high standard.
