The popular Disney’s High School Musical JR was brought to life on stage at Calderhead High School by the junior cast of Shotts St Patrick’s AOG playing to sell-out performances. This production brought out the issues of love, friendships and family of the students at East High as they balanced their normal study with extra curricular activities. Troy was played by Jack Stewart who demonstrated a natural ability as a stage performer and was well paired with Olivia Semple who provided a first rate performance as Gabrielle. The part of Sharpay Evans was shared by Emily Franchi and Morgan O’Hare. In the performance I attended Emily undertook the role as the proud Sharpay who would stop at nothing to get her own way by manipulating others, even her twin brother Ryan, also ably played by Nathaniel Sweeney. I understand Morgan also provided a great performance. Although space does not permit me to name each principal individually, together with the supporting chorus, they all provided great performances. ‘What I’ve Been Looking For’ was sung really well by Sharpay and Ryan and then again in the reprise by Troy and Gabrielle. The movement for ‘Get’cha Head In The Game’ was brilliantly synchronised with the music. The choreography for ‘We’re All In This Together’ was sharp and more importantly, never was a title to a song more appropriate for this group of performers as it is all about teamwork and embracing the efforts of the cast, production team and those who provided additional drama and singing coaching. Well done guys, keep up the good work!
