Shotts St Patrick’s returned to home territory to present Disney’s ‘Aladdin Junior’ in the auditorium of the new Calderhead High School. This was quite a different concept for the company by producing and directing a show which featured 45 young people aged between 9 and 13 who were proactively recruited from schools in the Shotts, Harthill, Allanton and Wishaw area. Through the production team and drama coaches within the Opera Group, the young people were ably tutored and coached. On seeing the show in rehearsal it was not surprising that it was a sell out two weeks before curtain up as the talent displayed on stage was plentiful and the enthusiasm was electrifying. This project provided an excellent example of how to actively promote local amateur theatre and generate interest from young people. Those in principle roles included Finlay Cook (Aladdin), Breid Greer (Jasmine), Christopher Bell (Genie), James Hughes (Jafar), Nathaniel Sweeney (Iago), Lee Heraghty-White (Sultan) and Aran Boyle (Razoul). It would be unfair for me to single anyone out as they all brought great characterisation to their parts and were supported by the entire cast including various narrators, Princes, Guards and Townspeople. All sang and performed well and the production team led by Matthew and Fraser must be congratulated for bringing out the best in the company. Well done to one and all!
