Based on the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR.makes a vibrant splash onto the stage in this magical and joy-filled production from HLOS Juniors.

Beneath the waves, young mermaid Ariel, beautifully portrayed by Imogen Petty, dreams of a life beyond the ocean’s surface. With a natural innocence and determination, she captures Ariel’s longing for the human world, despite the stern warnings of her father, King Triton (Benjamin Bingham-Ford). When she rescues the charming Prince Eric (Carter Blakeley) from a storm-tossed ship, the spark of young love is instant and heartfelt.

Enter Ursula, deliciously wicked and commanding in Leia Barton’s performance, who tempts Ariel into a perilous bargain—three days on land in exchange for her voice. With loyal companions Flounder (Phoebe Jones), Sebastian (Lily Rush), and the ever-enthusiastic Scuttle (Inara Ashraf) by her side, Ariel’s journey becomes a race against time to secure true love’s kiss.

Musically, the production soars. Numbers such as “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” “Poor unfortunate souls” and “Kiss the Girl” are delivered with confidence and charm, enhanced by lovely harmonies and assured solo performances. The vocals throughout are a real highlight, showcasing the impressive talent within this young cast.

Visually, the show is a triumph. The set may be minimal, but it is cleverly and effectively used, allowing the vibrant costumes, detailed make-up, and dynamic choreography to shine. The video wall adds depth and atmosphere, while slick scene transitions keep the storytelling flowing seamlessly. Particular praise must go to the magical transformation moments for Ariel, executed with polish and theatrical flair.

What stands out most is the confidence and joy radiating from every performer on stage. Each child looked completely at home beneath the lights, clearly relishing every moment of the experience.

Under the imaginative direction of Heather Garside, the production is shaped with warmth and clarity of vision. Musical Director Tom Devine ensures the score sparkles, while Sarah Parkinson’s energetic choreography—ably supported by Dance Captain Grace Fawcett—fills the stage with movement and colour. Behind the scenes, Stage Manager Ben Garbett and ASM Chloe Gravenor keep the production running like clockwork, supported by Stephen Rickard’s crisp sound design and Mark Jennens’ atmospheric lighting. Props by Gail Fawcett and costumes by Jeanette Thompson and Deborah Hough complete this enchanting underwater world.

For a first-time viewing of The Little Mermaid on stage, and a first time watching a HLOS Juniors show, this production was an absolute delight. In truth, it was so engaging I could happily have stayed to watch it all over again that evening. HLOS Juniors have delivered a production brimming with heart, talent, and theatrical magic.

Thank you for a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment!
