It was a sunny afternoon—reminiscent of Florida’s own Sunshine State—that gave us a true taste of the magical world of Disney.

Coleshill on Stage brought the iconic music from Disney’s stage and screen productions to life with flair. This much-anticipated concert had been in the planning for some time, with the necessary performing rights in place.

The group carefully followed the stipulations laid out by the rights holders. This meant no costumes, movement, or props that resembled the Disney originals—a rider which was followed to the letter.

The staging was simple yet effective, keeping the focus on the music and the performers. As with previous concerts, the cast entered in an orderly line and took their seats, ready to transport us into a world of song.

Most of the numbers were performed with folders or electronic devices to hand—a practical choice, especially given the limited rehearsal time. Even so, some soloists delivered their pieces from memory.

Selecting just a few highlights from such an enjoyable concert is no easy task—please forgive me if your personal favourite goes unmentioned!

The show opened with the uplifting Spirit of Adventure from Up, offering just a taste of what was to come. This was followed by a stirring rendition of Go the Distance from Hercules—a timely inclusion as the stage adaptation is about to open in the West End.

Jodie Butler gave a strong solo performance of I’ll Make a Man Out of You from Mulan, while Caroline Butler and Esme Stewart delivered an equally assured duet of How Far I’ll Go from Moana. Molly Bennett gave a clear and confident rendition of Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid.

The second act brought further memorable performances, including Dean James’s take on You’re Welcome from Moana. Amy Reynolds performance of Lost in the Woods from Frozen II, while Ashleigh Poppitt brought us Life Is a Highway from Cars. Daniel Butler and Jen Walker delivered a harmonised duet of I See the Light from Tangled.

The medleys were especially enjoyable, featuring songs from two of Disney’s biggest successes—Aladdin, and The Lion King. Each medley was delivered with clarity and good harmonies—well done to all involved. A selection of songs from Beauty and the Beast were a particular highlight for me

Andrew Smith had a busy afternoon, seamlessly switching between conducting, live piano accompaniment, and providing insightful commentary between songs. Personally, I was rather alarmed to be reminded that Toy Story is now 30 years old!

The final solo of the afternoon came from Pauline Peach with a touching performance of Remember Me from Coco. Pauline has been a member of COS since 1987.

During the concert there was an exciting announcement about the group’s upcoming production of Hairspray: The Broadway Musical. Playing the role of Tracy Turnblad will be Laura King, who gave us a rendition of Journey to the Past from Anastasia during this concert.

There’s a real sense of anticipation for Coleshill on Stage’s return to The Core Theatre in Solihull—especially after the disappointment of their last production being cancelled just before the dress rehearsal, through no fault of their own.

Here’s hoping COS’s well-deserved return to the stage is filled with the success.
