Carnoustie Musical Society took us back to the 70’s with a show filled with well-known hits that had the audience singing along. The story is a simple one. Boy wants fame! He signs up with the Devil and regret follows.

Jack played by Gary Cavanagh took us on a whirlwind journey of love and loss. His vocals were spot on and his duets with Jane (Kerry Mitchell) were heart felt. Kerry gave Jane all the attitude of a 70’s girl who longed for security but was getting tired of waiting.

We had other pairings in this show. Heathcliffe (Gavin Burton) the resident star at the disco and his fickle girlfriend Kathy (Lucy Flight) were made for each other. Well played with the right amount of aggression by Gavin and the two-timing attitude of Lucy they gave the action the twist in the tale. The other pair were Jack and Jane’s friends Tom (Gary Ducat) and Maggie (Alyson Christie). They managed to fill the stage with fun with Tom’s attempts to get off properly with Maggie, who was constantly putting him down.

Enter the Devil’s handmaiden (Natalie Morris) full of menace and very persuasive she manipulated the action with style. Helped along by Duke (Craig Douris) they successfully gave the dark side a commanding presence.

The principals along with other supporting cast (Alan Donaldson, Jim Robertson, Dexter Brandy, Diane Smith, Eve Burton, Bethany Edwards, Kayleigh Winton and Claire Ralston) ensured the action and storytelling flowed smoothly. The featured singers and vocalists (Karen Fleming, Marina Kyle, Joanna Munro, Elaine Scougal, Susan Kydd and Jane Fenton) ensured the lovely harmonies shone. The dancing was enhanced by the featured dancers who took centre stage in most of the musical numbers (Claire Smith, Ella Smith, Lynsey Orme, Emily Donaldson, Ana Pons Henderson). Well done girls.

The singing was well rehearsed and full of disco vibes. The dancing was co-ordinated and fitted well into the period and style of songs.  The action flowed ensuring that the music was supported in its starring role. Well done production team your hard work was evident. Lighting and sound fitted well with the story and props and costume completed the picture. Finally congratulations to the backstage crew for seamless transitions. Thanks again Carnoustie for a fun evening.
