It is difficult knowing where to start except after postponements due to Covid it was well worth waiting for. It was well paced and fun. The production team and cast should be justifiably proud of what was achieved.
There is so much interaction between the characters that it is essential that they work as a team and they certainly did that. David Crump and Matthew Collins as the two contrasting styles of conman worked really well together and there were some really funny moments as the smooth, suave Lawrence Jameson (David Crump) tried to turn the rough diamond Freddy ‘Buzz’ Benson (Matthew Collins) into conman whilst they were conning each other at the same time. Jameson was aided and abetted by the police chief, Andre Thibault, superbly played by Paul Harper with his French accent. Most musicals have a romantic interest and this was provided by Thibault and Muriel Eubanks played by the delightful Helen Gilfoyle. It also provided another vehicle for some comedy and fun. There was a stirring rendition of Oklahoma? by Libby Gilbert in the role of Jolene Oakes. The arrival of the talented Debbie Crump as the innocent and demure tourist, Christine Colgate, brings the story to its hilarious conclusion. The singing of all principals in solos, duets and ensembles was exemplary with all voices perfectly blended. The ensemble were kept busy as they appeared in many guises throughout the show but always with a defined character to portray. The choreography was very slick, covering a range of styles, and was executed with confidence by the cast. The talented orchestra, under the direction of Gladstone Wilson, were very supportive of the singing and never overpowered them. The many scene changes were carried quickly and smoothly and there were some excellent costumes. The whole production was enhanced by a good lighting plot and well-balanced sound.
Congratulations to everyone involved!
