Huge thank you to Murton Theatre Group for the invitation to their play, “Dirty Dusting”. Performed at the Glebe centre, a venue which holds many special memories for me although it’s certainly changed dramatically of late and it was directed by Gordon Richardson.
The script is an utterly hilarious tale of three elderly cleaning ladies who start up a telephone sex line when faced with redundancy, and the fun begins! The “Telephone Bells” is set up and is a complete secret from their families and colleagues, for now! Very much a must-see comedy story which had us all laughing in the audience.
There was a lovely rapport between the cast members who worked well together and had a lovely relationship between themselves. Elsie, the “experienced” of the trio was played by Anne Malpass, always dependable to bring the humour, timing, suggestive lines and wit to any production she’s cast in. She brought us all to hysterics with her lines and a raise of an eyebrow! Ann-Marie Clayton played Gladys, and as always excelled in everything she did. I’ve certainly seen her in a new light after this performance, and her timing and delivery were spot on. Carole Young played Olive the ex-guide leader very well, and her confidence seemed to grow in Act 2, and Lee Passmoor brought us Dave the boss, well and truly out of the usual for him, it was great to see him playing a bit of a baddy! Lee had great stage presence and was a pleasure to watch. All of you did extremely well!
There was some topical amends to the script, making reference to local public houses and football teams bringing the play closer to home which was a nice touch.
There was a simply fixed set which was extremely well dressed with lots of detail into the office environment where the play was set and provided the audience with the perfect environment. It would perhaps have been slightly better set more downstage if possible simply as the cast ended significantly upstage for the majority of the performance. I do suspect this was something to do with where the curtain lies however.
There was a few too many prompts used the night I visited which was a little disappointing but a lovely evening entertainment was had. Thank you and I shall never look at a vacuum hose the same again!
