The script for this version of the traditional pantomime, written by company member Trevor Nicol, was full of witty dialogue and peppered with enough local references to elicit lots of recognition from the full house audience. Nicholas Nicol as the cook Sara Sidebottom was outrageously elegant and flirtatious and, with the raise of an eyebrow, could have the audience in stitches. He was assisted in his comic endeavours by young Joshua McDiarmid as his nephew Idle Jack. Aileen Hendry was in fine thigh-slapping form in the title role of Dick Whittington with his ever faithful Charlie the Super Cat (Nina Thomson) by his side. Morag Russell was delightful as Dick’s love interest Alice Fitzwarren. Steven Kelly was eminently hissable as King Rat but there was never any doubt that he would ever get the better of Fiona McDonald’s guardian fairy Astra. Strong support was given by Brian Howlett (Alderman Fitzwarren), Ashley Taylor and Benedict Donnelly (hapless seamen Captain Cockle and Mr Mussel) and Fiona Chapman and Carla Kelly (pirates Captain Morgan and Martini). Singing and movement from both the principals and chorus were excellent. Costumes and set were both colourful and added greatly to the overall success of the production. An excellent evening’s entertainment!
