From the opening chorus of dancing rats to the superb finale, performed by the large, well-drilled and rehearsed chorus this well-known story contained everything required to get the Christmas spirit off to a great start. It had the romantic couple in Dick (Michael Burns), with an extremely pleasant voice, a charming Alice (Kim Brymer) nice duets from the two of them; an extremely menacing King Rat (Grant Roach) who well deserved the boos and hisses from the first-night audience made up of mainly Brownies and Rainbows. Tommy the Cat (Kelli Griffis) in a costume straight from the Lloyd Webber show! was outstanding, with extremely expressive expressions and excellent dance style. George Doherty was the typical panto dame and, along with Idle Jack (Alex Wells) carried much of the comedy of the production to the appreciation of the audience, both young and old. With a Punk Fairy Bowbells (Audrey Doherty) and a multi-quick-change Jerry Swinley as Alderman Fitzwarren-Captain Horatio Fitzwarren–Emperor of Morocco!! the action moved thick and fast, helped along by excellent choreography and chorus movement – especially the crew of young and enthusiastic sailors at the end of the first act! Well done, Carnoustie Theatre Club.
