Although the professional companies have ended their seasonal pantomime performances, it's now the opportunity for amateur groups to take centre stage. In her first directing role for Theatrecraft, Heidi Gilmour has animated Cheryl Marksford’s script beautifully.

The scenery was meticulously constructed, which even featured a moving ship, all efficiently managed by the backstage crew. The lighting design and sound contributed significantly to the overall atmosphere of this colourful production. Costuming was both exceptional and vibrant, with Dame Delia notably undertaking multiple costume and wig changes. The reference to Claudia Winkleman from "The Traitors" was an inspired inclusion. I also particularly liked the various sea creature costumes in the ‘watery scene.‘ The make-up for Tom Cat, King Rat, and Vermina required a realistic approach, while Dame Delia's look needed to be deliberately exaggerated. The make-up artists are to be commended for their excellent work. Both Senior and Junior dancers executed the choreography, inspired by Courtney Jones, with impressive discipline, a credit to their dance tutors. Musical Director Jacqueline Francis led the quartet of musicians, which blended well with the melodic singing from both principles and ensemble.

I’m sure most people know the basic story of Dick Whittington and Cheryl’s script is not far different but in this case instead of traditionally a man playing the Dame we had the multi-talented Cheryl Marksford as Dame Delia Dumplings. What stage presence she had with her mannerisms and facial expressions – a joy to watch.  Luke Humphries was the lovable Tom Cat making him a very endearing character. King Rat was played so well by Jeff Barker, he certainly got the audience booing every time he appeared, together with his sidekick Vermina (Vikki Ludlow). A pantomime wouldn't be complete without a comedy duo, and Paul Stanbridge as Captain Cornelius Crabb along with Ryan Jones as First Mate Perry Winkle delivered this perfectly. Conor White brought athleticism to the title role of Dick Whittington, pairing well on stage with Katie Steele as Alice Fitzwarren and as her father, Alderman Fitzwarren, Nathan Emdon gave a solid performance. Of course, there were other supporting roles and an enthusiastic ensemble, all of whom contributed to the show's overall enjoyment and fun.

There was no better way to brighten up a dreary January afternoon by enjoying this vibrant, charming production with a cast that clearly enjoyed every minute on stage.
