This was a very enjoyable production from the society, and well done to Trevor on his debut as a Director.

The pantomime moved along at a good pace and there were some good performances. William France, playing Idle Jack, got the show off to a lively start with his introductory warm up. He was joined by Anthony France, playing Sarah the Cook. They really got the audience warmed up, encouraging their participation. Perhaps a very very small down side to the warm up was it went on for rather a long time, perhaps the audience were too slow in responding to Sarah and Jack.

All principal parts were well played, Jessica Turner was a suitably evil Queen Rat, and her costume was superb, maybe she could have been rather more sinister at times, but that’s just my opinion, what do I know???.She was ably helped by her sidekicks, Rot n’ Stench, What great names for the knockabouts. Joseph Lister was a very able Alderman Fitzwarren, and daughter Alice was well performed by Charlotte Powell. There wasn’t a weak link in the team, and I was very impressed by Caoimhe France and Holly Sanders, as the pearly king and queen, I thought they led the chorus numbers and routines very well. The chorus routines were all well performed by a very young enthusiastic chorus. I particularly enjoyed the crew performing the big numbers, and the crew member playing the Piano Tuna cameo, was very inspired.

I felt the scenery worked well, the normally unsung heroes in the crew did a good job. I feel that as Trevor gains more directorial experience he will do away with using tabs to change scenes, which seems to be the modern trend, and makes changes quicker and easier. The sound was generally good, and the backing tracks were well worked. Well done to the front of house crew.

All in all this was a very good pantomime, and the audience deserved a much bigger audience than the one they had on the night I was there. It can be quite soul destroying to walk out on stage and look out on to a half empty house. Well done MAOS for a very enjoyable evening, and the trip back to Workington was uneventful.
