It’s always a pleasure to go and see a good traditional panto, and Dick Turpin Rides Again had all the right ingredients. A real character, although history, romance, and legend have blurred the previously notorious character to mellow into Dick Turpin, Highwayman and Knight of the road.
Jim Woods, as The Mayor, stamped his mean character from the word go, the boos not taking long to get established. His dim-witted henchmen, George Collins and Terry Pritchard, were always getting things wrong, much to the delight of the audience. Lee Rodgers gave an excellent performance as Dame Perry Winkle, with just the right amount of over-the-top costumes. Jack Collings, as Wee Willie Winkle, delighted the audience with his innocent charm, but always doing wrong in the eyes of his mother, Dame Perry. Liz Taylorson, as the charming Dick Turpin, added the love interest. A host of other characters added substance to the plot, keeping everyone on their toes. A small but enthusiastic chorus supported the cast throughout.
The scenery and costumes added to the enjoyment of the evening. The singing was not perhaps the best it could have been, but the audience were very appreciative. Well done to Reg, Ian and the team for an enjoyable night’s entertainment
