This was pantomime at its best. It was traditional with all the expected characters and characteristics of the genre. It was skilfully written by David Crump and the jokes came thick and fast. In fact they were so fast that there were occasions when the audience were about two jokes behind.
A successful pantomime needs a good dame and they certainly had one in Dave Crump (Betty Potter.) A good principal boy and girl are needed to provide the romantic interest and Debbie Crump (Dick Potter(Turpin)) worked well with Laura Harper (Lizzie Bowler) to provide that. A pantomime wouldn’t work without someone to boo and hiss and Demetri Wade (Sir Jasper Clutch) encouraged the audience to participate at every opportunity and his diction was exquisite in doing this. He had an excellent foil in the guise of Fairy Flutterbye given a dizzy characterisation by Lisa King. There was plenty of comedy from Richard Pritchett (Stan Potter), Jodie Cockeram (Delilah Potter), Paul Wescott (Mr Winge) and Stuart Etherington (Mr Gripe) all of whom displayed top class comedy timing. Many of the remaining cast provided more action in a variety of roles and when not doing this were part of a lively chorus.
The sets and costumes were effective and the whole production was supported by a sympathetic band under the direction of Rob Norman.
Congratulations to everyone involved!
