Dames at Sea is a tap-happy GEM of a show celebrating the golden era of movie musicals. I last saw a production of this musical comedy at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne in 2005 staring Tim Flavin, who not only played the romantic lead but also choreographed and directed the show.
Members of GEMS, under the direction of Paula Gosnell-Diggens and musical direction by Adrian Connell, presented an enjoyable evening as the story of Ruby (Elizabeth Harrold) a talented young hopeful arrives in NYC determined to break into showbusiness. Elizabeth’s performance of ‘Raining in My Heart’ supported by the full company was one of the many highlights of the evening. It took me back to 2005, but where were the umbrellas?
Dick (Ian Diggens) a singing sailor and his pal Lucky (Nick Hudson) shared a great chemistry, comedy timing and delivered confident performances. Mona Kent (Toni Roast) the aggressive and seductive leading lady was supported by Captain (Michael Donavan), Joan (Vanessa Rowe) and Hennessy (Tash Ings) - all had perfected strong characters.
Well done to the members of the Paula Gosnell Dance School who supported the cast and showcased a variety of dance styles, and to the 3 musicians who produced a lovely musical accompaniment from the side of the stage. The Gravesend and District Theatre Guild is a small performance space and recognition to the everyone involved with scenery design, props and costumes. I especially liked the attention to detail on the flats used in Act Two.Thank you to GEMS for a warm welcome on my arrival and for an enjoyable evening.
