This comedy play by Denise Deegan is a parody of many of the adventure stories about life in a 1920’s girls’ English Boarding School and is based on “The Testing of Tansy” by Winifred Norling. The original production of the play opened in 1983 and has an excellent script completely capturing the atmosphere of the 1920’s.
Director, Renee Ames had obviously researched all aspects of this piece and her attention to detail was first class. The authentic costumes, props and hairstyles were impeccable and I particularly noticed that all the girls wore the same shoes with their uniforms. As I was sitting on the front row I noticed these details.
Poulton Drama had ensured that they had a cast of talented, enthusiastic and energetic actors to portray the variety of character roles in this piece. I could find no weak links in this production. Diction and Projection were excellent and all on stage had beautifully delineated characters.
Helen Axon as Daisy Meredith was completely immersed in her role and we sympathized with her every set back as the innocent super-achiever from a poor elementary school, She played the character with so much determination and enthusiasm and we, the audience were always “on her side” against the snobbish prejudice and pranks. The rescue scene from the cliff top was hilarious and so well done. Claire Hull as Trixie Martin showed her obvious talent. Her facial expressions and use of her whole body conveyed her enthusiasm and commitment as the loyal friend. She was fascinating to watch. Sarah Douglas as Clare Beaumont gave a very physical performance with great energy and vocal range. All on stage were first class and Renee Ames must be delighted at the overall production?
The Set was outstanding, front projection giving depth to what I know is a very small playing area. Incidental music, played by Marilyn Lloyd created just the correct atmosphere. I had a delightful evening with Poulton Drama and I look forward to their next production. Thank you for making my wife and I so welcome.
