This was an adventurous choice of show for SLO being virtually unknown, though by the well-known team of Kander and Ebb. This murder mystery set among a theatrical company preparing for their opening night has many references to theatrical activity to amuse thespians but was also appealing to the general audience – some of whom had returned for a second visit.
Southern Light fielded a strong cast. Peter Tomassi played Lieut. Frank Cioffi, the investigating homicide detective and amateur thespian determined to help the show to go on whatever happened. He displayed excellent comic timing with his many switches from detective to theatre fanatic. Laura Jordan Reed was the forceful producer of the show, Carmen Bernstein, fighting all the way for the on stage show to overcome its many problems, including several murders and attempted murders, a wayward husband and a stage struck daughter. Alan Gow played a very OTT “show” director.
The laughs came quickly as the story unfolded until Lieut. Cioffi unmasked the murderer and helped the show to go on. The “cast” were much involved throughout in both “on stage” and “back stage” scenes and the whole show moved smoothly. Congratulations to all involved.
