Curtain Up On Murder is a thriller by Bettine Manktelow which involves an amateur theatre company which is rehearsing in the theatre at the end of the pier. Storms rage overhead and the doors are locked – they are trapped! A mysterious, ghostly presence passes across the stage, and when the Assistant Stage Manager falls to certain death through a trapdoor, the remaining actors are thrown into disarray. Their panic increases when one of the actresses is poisoned and it becomes evident that a murderer is in their midst - a murderer who, it soon transpires, will not stop until they are all dead ...
There was a sociable buzz throughout the theatre and an air of expectation. This production gave the audience a thoroughly entertaining evening. The action of the play provided the audience with unexpected twists and turns, inspiring gasps and ‘aahs’. The cast included some new faces but the mix created a very effective ‘whole’ and they developed and maintained the atmosphere throughout.
The tension of the play was further enhanced by the incidental music, composed especially for this production, by a local musician Robin Scott. The music raised the emotional atmosphere between the cast and the audience.
