~~It was the enthusiasm and energy and overall talent of those performing on stage which took away the breath of the audience: this was some show! Steve Reading as Bobby Child gave an exemplary and brilliant performance, not only did he have the right vocal style for the numbers, but he showed the casual and relaxed style for the character, and he had mastered his feet for the dance numbers. And opposite him, Helen Stoddart as Polly Baker was a delight with her acting moods and stage presence and movement, but especially for that voice and breath control; these two leads really had this show conquered and their singing just stole the hearts of the audience. The show does not stand on just two leads: the talent and style and good musicality displayed by Peta Reading as Irene Roth and Stephanie Treagust as Tessie were both very strong. Also not to forget the rather brash and loud of small-town Lank from Alan Jenkins and his treatment of guests at the hotel (liked the humour with his two visitors). As a character piece the accolades just have to be heaped on the head of Matt Sackman as Bela Zangler, he was perfect; and that sequence between him and Bobby Child in tandem was so reminiscent of “The Two Ronnies’. I find it difficult to fault this production in any way whatsoever, my sincere congratulations to all involved, cast, back stage staff and the production team led by Producer and Choreographer Audrey Pring. Congratulations also to Musical Director Alan Pring and his fabulous orchestra for giving us all the pleasure of hearing Gershwin as it should be played.
