This was a repeat for Lyric Club, after some fifteen years, of this ‘wannabe a song’n’dance man’ show, but not too many from that version appeared this time. It moved with the same pace, though, led by John McGlone (Bobby Child) and Catherine Mackenzie (Polly Baker) as the principal lovematch characters, although as the show progresses, one begins to wonder if it will happen. There was a touch of farce with the adoption of disguise by Bobby, and a hilarious piece of well-timed action with the real Bela Zangler (Jonathan Procter in his first Lyric Show). The contrast between the sophisticated New York dance troupe, led by Morven McCallum (Patsy) and the residents of Deadrock — Ghyll McCallum (Hank), Graeme Southwood (Moose) and Andrew Jack (Mingo) amongst others, was well portrayed. Polished movement from the dancers and good singing from all — particularly the cowboys at one point — and solid characterisation from the principals — Julie Cassells (Bobby’s imperious mother), Maureen Todd (Bobby’s fiancée ‘til she falls for another!) and Ian Atherton, back after some years away, (Polly’s dad Everett). John McGlone became suitably ‘OTT Theatrical’ as Bobby/pseudo Zangler, whilst Catherine was very feisty in her stance to save her dad’s beloved theatre. Alan Orr and Club President Lorna Ramsay were the English couple which stumbled into town, creating humour with another contrast, people looking for standards which were totally alien to the locals. All in all, a perfect show to lift the spirits in a fairly gloomy March, with a good selection of well-known tunes and enough in the story to raise many different emotions in the audience, well performed by this club.
